Established in 1997, Portland Schools Foundation’s First Octave Grants are designed to strengthen the quality of art and music education for students; and in 2010 the program was extended outside of Portland Public Schools to also include Centennial, David Douglas, Parkrose, and Reynolds school districts. The First Octave Grants are focused on supporting art and music education for Portland’s youth with a goal of increasing access for underserved and underrepresented students and schools. The Portland Schools Foundation receives contributions in support of the First Octave Fund from individuals, foundations, and businesses, reflecting the strong support of the community for strengthening art and music in the schools.
Since its creation, The First Octave Fund has infused more than $215,000 into public schools throughout Portland, meeting a need that would otherwise go unmet. For the 2010-11 year, more than $10,500 will be awarded. Principals, teachers, and staff within the Centennial, David Douglas, Parkrose, Portland Public, and Reynolds school districts and non-profit organizations with 501(c)(3) status that demonstrate strong partnerships with the school districts identified may be awarded between $500 and $1,000 for projects that promote art and music education targeted at children and youth in public school, with a goal of increasing the success of underserved and underrepresented students.
This year’s grants were made possible through generous contributions from donors, in particular, the Dorothy F. Sherman Music Education Fund for Children of the Oregon Community Foundation.
