Excellence in Education

Each year, the Schools Foundation presents awards to high-poverty, high-performing schools in the PPS District as part of our commitment to excellent schools and excellent classrooms for every child.

We recognize schools that have shown significant progress in raising student achievement and closing the achievement gap. These schools are chosen through a careful review of student achievement over three years in both reading and math for all schools where 50% or more of the students are from low-income families.

There is remarkable consistency in the research on the essential elements of schools that are closing the gap. Six key factors need to be in place for schools to make significant gains:

  • High expectations
  • Leadership and focus
  • Quality teaching
  • Professional development
  • Community engagement
  • Accountability

Through hard work, vision, and experience, Boise-Eliot, Jason Lee and Woodmere Elementary Schools, the 2008 Excellence in Education Awardees, have this winning combination.

Thank you to Washington Mutual for so generously sponsoring these awards.
